Seeing Red June 2, 2011

A couple of months ago I decided that I wanted to repaint the kitchen. It has been a beige color for years and I have just grown tired of it. After looking at a bunch of kitchen websites and countless trips to hardware stores to look at paint chips I decided that I wanted to paint the kitchen red. I had read that red rooms are supposed to be energizing. Maybe having a red kitchen will give me the energy to clean it. That was the easy decision, now to choose which red and that is a much more difficult decision. I stuck a dozen or so little paint chips all over the kitchen walls hoping one would “speak” to me. After a couple of weeks staring at the paint chips I got it narrowed down to three.

Paint colors have such great names. These are Habanero Chile, Red Obsession and Foxfire. I think I am going to go with Habanero Chile because it sounds more kitcheny.

Micro S’mores June 1, 2011

Found these at the store last night. Not quite sure how I feel about them. I like to think of myself as somewhat of a s’mores purest. For a s’more to be made properly the marshmallows must be toasted over an open fire. But, since s’mores are good I was willing to try the flattened marshmallow microwave version. Here is the extremely simple process.

You will need a chocolate bar, graham crackers, two flat marshmallows, and a microwave safe plate.

Place half a graham cracker on the plate.

Top with half of the chocolate bar.

Put two little flat marshmallows on top of the chocolate.

Microwave for 12 seconds or until marshmallows start to puff up.

Place the other half of the graham on top and squish it down a bit.

Microwave s’mores are okay in a pinch but don’t really compare to a s’more with that golden brown slightly smokey marshmallow taste.

However the lack of campfire toasted marshmallow didn’t seem to bother this chocolate covered little guy!

Veggie Garden in the ‘burbs May 28, 2011

Last year we (and by we I mean my husband, his brother and their little helper) built a raised vegetable garden. I thought it would be fun to have the kids help grow some of our food and learn a little bit about the whole process along the way. This reminded me of my childhood gardening experiences. My parents didn’t have a little garden in the back yard, they had a really, really big one. We planted dozens of different vegetables. I was forced into child labor and had to pull weeds and pick beans all summer long. At least that is how I remember it. We canned tomatoes in every form imaginable, froze corn and “put-up” beans. As a child I hated green beans. Kneeling over squatty little bean bushes in the hot sun looking for little pods I didn’t want to ever eat was not how I wanted to spend my summer days. I harbor a little bean-picking resentment. Now back to MY garden.

I planted strawberries, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, radishes, zucchini, peppers, and wouldn’t you know it, BEANS!

Hello world! May 25, 2011

I am going to give the blogging world a shot. We will see if this turns into another “sounds like something fun I would like to do and later fizzles out cause I lose interest” venture, or maybe I have found my calling. I still haven’t quite decided what direction I am going to go with this but I am sure there will be posts about kids, my faith, cooking, homeschooling, things I have decided to try, and what I have found interesting in life. Hope you find something worth coming back for!
